Space Age Fiberglass Bed by Astarte, Italy, 1970s

The bed is an iconic piece of Italian design from the 1970s, produced by Astarte Milano, a brand known for its Space Age-style creations. This style, which emerged in the post-war period, celebrates futuristic optimism through fluid, bold forms and innovative materials such as fiberglass, evoking a sense of modernity and space-age sophistication. The bed features an organic, sculptural silhouette, with a headboard and footboard that gently curve in an elegant, asymmetrical arc, lending an almost "floating" and dynamic appearance. The monolithic and minimalist structure, devoid of superfluous decorative elements, emphasizes the purity of the curved lines typical of Space Age design. Assembled from four independent modules, making it easy to transport and install. The standard dimensions are suitable for a double bed. Designed for essential comfort, with an integrated metal base that supports standard mattresses. Fiberglass makes it waterproof and easy to clean, ideal for modern or contemporary interiors. Designed in the 1970s, this bed embodies the Space Age spirit, influenced by the technological boom and space (think of the 1969 lunar landing). Designers like Verner Panton and Eero Aarnio pioneered the use of fiberglass for "capsule-like" furniture, and Astarte contributed with accessible yet iconic pieces. Today, it is a collector's item, sought after for its versatility in minimalist, Scandinavian, or eclectic interiors, and symbolizes an era of innovation where furniture becomes habitable sculpture. In short, this bed is more than just a piece of furniture, it is a design statement: elegant, ergonomic, and timeless, perfect for those seeking a touch of futurism in their everyday lives.
